Online Electrical Authorization Training: Complete Guide [2026]

Electrical authorization training can be partially completed via an online pathway (e-learning) for the theoretical component, followed by a mandatory practical component. Here are the key points to know about online electrical authorization training.

Online electrical authorization training: what does the NF C18-510 standard require?

The NF C18-510 standard is the French standard that establishes safety requirements for operations carried out on or near electrical installations. It also defines the objectives and procedures for electrical authorization training, according to the targeted symbols.

The standard authorizes the theoretical component of the training to be completed via e-learning. But not under just any conditions. Here are the NF C18-510 standard requirements:

  • the learner is supervised by a tutor-trainer to:
    • ensure knowledge acquisition during the pathway at checkpoints
    • adapt and validate the different stages of their pathway.
  • the online training must be completed within a limited timeframe, of the order of a few weeks, to ensure the quality of knowledge acquisition or retention
  • the online theoretical training must be supplemented, as soon as possible, by training in the presence of an instructor with the objectives of:
    • verifying the theoretical knowledge acquired or reviewed during the online training
    • completing the practical component
    • conducting the practical and overall assessment.

In summary, a 100% e-learning electrical authorization training, without any interaction with an instructor, does not meet the NF C18-510 standard recommendations. It must necessarily be delivered in a blended format (“Blended Learning”) combining theory via e-learning and practice via video conference or in person.

Authorization levels available via online training

online e-learning electrical authorization training

The main levels offered in “Blended Learning” format are:

  • H0 B0 authorization: for non-electricians who perform non-electrical operations in Low Voltage and High Voltage electrical risk environments. At VoltWork, we offer H0 B0 online electrical authorization training in a blended format: e-learning (3 to 4 hours depending on the trainee’s level) followed by 2 hours of video conference with an instructor
  • BS BE Switching authorization: for non-electricians who perform “simple” electrical interventions and switching operations on Low Voltage electrical installations. At VoltWork, we offer BS BE Switching electrical authorization training in “Blended Learning” format: e-learning (5 to 7 hours depending on the trainee’s level) followed by 4 hours of in-person training
  • B1V B2V BC BR BE authorization: for Low Voltage electricians who carry out work, interventions and lockout/tagout procedures

How does the training work?

online electrical authorization training

As you will have understood, all electrical authorization training, whether in person or online, is divided into 2 parts: a theoretical component followed by a practical component.

  • The theoretical component is completed entirely remotely via an e-learning platform: these pathways generally combine courses, videos and MCQs to validate knowledge acquisition for each module
  • The practical component remains mandatory and can be completed:
    • Via video conference with an instructor for H0B0 levels
    • In person for other levels: hands-on practice on electrical installations is required during the practical training. This component can be delivered at a training center or at the company’s premises.

How long is an online training course?

  • The theoretical e-learning component lasts from 3 to 10 hours depending on the authorization level. Unlike in-person training, the advantage of e-learning is that the duration adapts to the learner’s electrical safety knowledge: for the same authorization, an expert will complete the pathway more quickly than a beginner.
  • The practical training duration also varies by authorization level:
    • The video conference for H0 B0 authorization lasts between 1 and 2 hours
    • For in-person practical training, allow between 4 and 7 hours
Electrical AuthorizationE-Learning DurationPractical Training Duration
H0 B03 to 4h1 to 2h
BS BE Switching5 to 7h4h
B1(V) B2(V) BR BC7 to 10h7h

What topics are covered in the theoretical e-learning training?

The e-learning training program varies according to the targeted authorization levels. However, here is a summary of the main topics covered:

  • Fundamentals of electricity
  • Effects of electric current on the human body
  • Voltage domains and their limits
  • Environment zones and their limits
  • Functions of LV and ELV electrical equipment
  • General prevention principles to apply during an operation
  • Collective protective equipment and their functions
  • Personal protective equipment and their usage limitations
  • Risks related to the use and handling of equipment and tools in an electrical environment
  • Work, lockout/tagout procedures, interventions, testing: execution requirements, associated documents and their transmission, and safety instructions
  • Response procedures in case of personal injury or fire in an electrical environment

What are the advantages of online training?

While this training format is not suited to all learners, it offers real advantages for autonomous trainees who are comfortable with digital tools.

  • Flexibility & Autonomy:
    • The learner can train at their own pace and according to their availability
    • They can log in to the training platform whenever they wish
    • This allows better adaptation to learners’ time and geographical constraints
    • An ideal format for learners undergoing recertification, who have already completed in-person training
  • Educational effectiveness:
    • Courses are divided into modules, enabling optimal progression and concentration
    • The learner can review each module multiple times to properly assimilate the theory
    • Content is varied (videos, animations, diagrams, etc.) to promote learning
  • Tracking and traceability:
    • The training pathway is precisely tracked
    • Intermediate and final assessments validate acquired knowledge
    • A pathway completion certificate is generated for each learner
  • Cost reduction:
    • Reduced accommodation and travel costs compared to fully in-person training. At VoltWork, we use this format extensively with companies located in training “white zones”: the nearest training centers are more than 1.5 hours’ drive away.

How much does online electrical authorization training cost?

Prices vary by training provider. At VoltWork we offer:

TrainingLevelPrice excl. VAT / person
H0 B0Initial & Recertification€150
BS BE SwitchingInitial€300
BS BE SwitchingRecertification€250

In conclusion, online training allows you to acquire the theoretical foundations flexibly, but must be supplemented by a practical component to obtain electrical authorization, in compliance with the NF C18-510 standard.
